Hierve El Agua, in Mexico’s Oaxaca state is reached by a torturous, mountain path from the ruins at Mitla. The collectivo taxi that navigates this dirt path transports its passengers along precipitous drops and spectacular views. The principal reason to visit Hierve El Agua is the natural oddity of its waterfall - a cascade whose mineral deposits have caused it to solidify into a giant outdoor stalactite. However, the mineral pools overlooking the falls may be an even greater delight. Swimming in these waters is like dipping in an infinity pool, yet with a horizon of breathtaking mountain greens instead of a cityscape’s metallic greys.
Many tours from Oaxaca include stops at Hierve El Agua. However, you can normally save about half the price of the tour if you DIY the itinerary - catch a bus from the second hand bus terminal to Mitla (about 14 pesos), before hopping in a collectivo to Hierve El Agua (25 pesos per person each way).
