The ancient ruins of the ancient Maya city of Copán are one of the archeological jewels of Latin America. The ruins were the site of a major kingdom that was at its height between the 5th and 9th centuries AD. When the city died, the jungle reclaimed the ruins. Now however, much of the jungle has been cleared so that the temples, ball courts and stelae can be explored in a manner that gives some sense of what must have been a stunning city of power, terror and great artistic achievement.
