Guatemala is a beautiful country of jungle, lakes and volcanoes. Its mixed Mayan and Spanish colonial heritage has infused the country with great cultural richness. There is appalling poverty and often peoples´ fear of violence and criminality is palpable. Yet warm smiles and generous welcomes have met me wherever I go in this country of contrasts and bright colours.
I have only just begun to scratch the surface of this country, but some early postings from my time in Guatemala include:
Don´t Let Me Be Misunderstood - early struggles with Spanish
Ring of Fire - climbing an active volcano and high-stakes flirting
Neon Bible - floating in the religious currents that flow through Guatemala
Hips Don’t Lie - new adventures in salsa.
Ground Beneath Her Feat - brief encounters in the gringo theme park called Antigua
